Who Are DCs Suicide Squad?

Sometimes when film adaptations of comic books are announced, a lot of the general public don't actually have a clue into the backstory, if any at all. I for one am in the dark about a lot of the Suicide Squad mythology so I wanted to find out who exactly these desperadoes are.

There have been many incarnations of the Suicide Squad aka Task Force X. The original members were actually upstanding heroes, who in surviving perilous, traumatic events, were inspired to and cared not for their own safety, when volunteering to go on extremely hard missions. The original band name comes from the minuscule chance of the members surviving the hostile situations they were about to encounter. But in later days, members of the Suicide Squad were all criminals with a high skill set, who were seen as inherently skilful and capable, but also totally expendable.

"Members therefore had the double pressure of taking on a mission knowing that they could die during the assignment or by having a bomb go off inside their heads".

The newer members; captured villains, would be forced to take on extremely dangerous missions, some would be afforded a lesser sentencing or more likely an easier incarceration period. But the real selling point was in the knowledge that they had each been implanted with a time bomb that nested cosily in their heads. This precaution usually persuaded the diabolical criminals to say 'yes', to a mission (especially if the bomb timer had already been activated before they had even agreed to go) but also served as the main reason to absolutely behave whilst free and make the utmost effort to return. Members therefore had the double pressure of taking on a mission knowing that they could die in combat or by having a bomb go off inside their heads, because they failed to complete the mission within a set time frame. This is the latest reason why the Suicide Squad have this name.

Deadshot - Played by Will Smith
Initially arriving in Gotham as a crime fighter, his dual purpose was to replace Batman as the guardian of Gotham (revealing himself to be an adversary rather than ally) and then take over the criminal underworld. His intentions exposed, he was imprisoned by Batman and Commissioner Gordon. His back story reveals a damaged psyche, where he come from a family where his father was an abusive tyrant. During one incident where he tried to protect his beloved brother, from yet another violent altercation, his attempt to shoot his father went horribly wrong and he accidentally shot his brother instead. That was the first and last time he missed a target.

Skills/Abilities: Expert Marksman, cybernetic eye to improve targeting, high level hand-to-hand combat.

Amanda Waller - Played by Viola Davis
Amanda Waller is the glue of the Suicide Squad. Holding a doctorate and a past role as a congressional aid, Waller is a government agent through and through. Her tenure as a straight forward government agent changed when she formed The Agency and became in charge of a section of Task Force X - The Suicide Squad. And despite walking the hardline and keeping everyone in check, with successful missions accomplished, Waller herself is something of a renegade when dealing with her superiors. It was also Amanda who came up with the idea of placing micro-explosives in the heads of agents, so that if they tried to escape or do something contrary to orders, the cerebral space would get messy.

Skills/Abilities: Field agent skills, advanced logistical warfare, game theory, guerrilla strategy, asset management.

Harley Quinn - Played by Margot Robbie
Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzell, M.D. was a psychiatrist who interned at Arkham Asylum. After analysing the Joker, she fell in love with him becoming his no.1 devotee...yeah...okay so the lunatics are really running the asylum. The Doc fell so hard for The Joker, that after he was badly beaten and returned to the asylum by Batman, Dr. Harleen, in seeing her true love extremely hurt, had a breakdown and became insane. Arise Harley Quinn the alter ego and play on her real name. Harley also finds a friend and ally in Poison Ivy who gives her a series of injections that enable her with special gifts.

Skills/Abilities: Immune to most poisons and toxins courtesy of Poison Ivy, Psychiatry so like the Joker she can get into your head, gymnastics, martial arts skills and meta abilities.

Rick Flag Played by Joel Kinnamen

There have been 3 Rick Flag's, Sr. Jr. and the third and they all have their own back story. Richard Montgomery Flagg, led a special division in WW2 called the Suicide Squadron. Richard Rogers Flagg headed up Task Force X, the last organisation that his father died working for. Additionally Flag Jr. died fighting a group of terrorists holed up in a bunker that his father had also stormed. Rick Flag III, who was adopted away, his father doesn't know of his existence.

The Joker - Played by Jared Leto
How does one really explain a psychopath of his calibre? The man is a mystery, inside a puzzle of chaos. He has no satisfactory origin story, no fighting ability, no special weapons, yet The Joker can meticulously plan or make up mayhem as he goes along, either way he is an extremely dangerous, mind manipulating, chess playing, sadistic maniac who has no fear of death and does all of this for fun.

Skills/Abilities: Is acute insanity a skill?

“I believe…whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you…stranger.”

Enchantress - Played by Cara Delevingne
Not born super-powered, freelance artist June Moone attends a fancy dress party, based in an old castle. Accidentally stumbling into a secret chamber, June encounters a mysterious being who empowers her with magical abilities.  All June has to say in order to transform is 'The Enchantress'  and she becomes a powerful sorceress. Fortunate for June, the castle in which she was empowered, was also currently playing host to an evil force and she was able to stop it...so far she sounds like one of the good guys, but the next time we see The Enchantress she is not so friendly and her current quest for power pits her against Supergirl which gives her villainy status.

Any none super-powered villain that can give Superman the grief that Lex does is worthy to take note of. Deadshot In Smallville

Captain Boomerang Played by Jai Courtney
It's no accident that George Harkness uses Boomerangs as his weapon of choice, the Australian started making them as a child and in his straight years he used them to perform as a promoter for a toy company. Things not going his way in life, Harkness eventually turned to a life of crime using his boomerangs as his personal arsenal and calling card. Like Batman has Baterangs for different uses, Boomerang fashions his boomerangs for all manner of applications including explosive ones, though I'd imagine you don't want those ones coming back to you.

Skills/Abilities: The creation and use of boomerangs in combat, assassination and infiltration situations.
