With language reminiscent of a fictional space between My So Called Life and Dawson's Creek, Marvel's Runaways is surprisingly sophisticated, for what is and what isn't a teen drama. The first episode is laden with a lot of issues; teen death, clique wars, feminism, alienation, burgeoning womanhood, cults, occultism, mysticism, the parent-child dynamic and of course powers. But I mention powers last, as so far, this surprisingly isn't the focus. The issue of powers is actually on the periphery and this is absolutely fine for now, as Runaways serves as a good watch with or without special abilities in the mix. The show is seemingly taking a path that other superhero shows will need to follow - by being different in its delivery, as the superhero show is fast becoming an oversaturated TV genre.
Episode 2 of Runaways is directed by Roxann Dawson (B'elanna Torres from Star Trek Voyager) and is a brilliant 'fill in the gap' alternative perspective episode, that brilliantly fits in front, in between and as a parallel to episode 1.
