Crazy Stupid Love is often billed as a ‘romantic comedy’, sometimes a romantic comedy drama, but I think it is a little bit too significant for the Rom-Com label. Personally, I would call CSL a romantic-drama and a very good one at that.
CSL is ultimately an exploration of the various Issues that we may encounter in various stages of our love lives and in looking at differing scenarios whether it be a new quest for love or dealing with an old crumbling relationship CSL is there to take us on a journey of hope and redemption.
The issues dealt with in CSL are:
- Dealing with love when it’s unrequited
- When it is not equally felt
- Not understood
"This film for me was simply amazing, every actor puts in the correct measure to create the best performance for their character, the dialogue is witty, sharp and human, yet the story straight-forward".
I don’t know why some critics didn’t like the film, I think perhaps they took the film title too literally and expected the ‘crazy’ part to reflect some overly zany, frat boy action. The ‘crazy’ and the ‘stupid’ in the title refer to the situations love can put you through and how when you step back and take a good look at your desires, reactions and self-propelled situations, very often they are stupid and crazy – but that’s how love can make you act.
This film for me was simply amazing, every actor puts in the correct measure to create the best performance for their character, the dialogue is witty, sharp and human, yet the story straight-forward. Contrary to the critics, it seems that the general public also loved CSL as much as I did and other than receiving many nominations from People’s Choice awards, it banked $142,851,197 at the box office, which is not bad for a film made for $50million.
CSL is a bitter sweet, then chocolate sweet experience, almost comically Shakespearian in parts. If you are looking for a more subtle and sophisticated celluloid experience having graduated from the Notting Hill’s, Friends With Benefits and No Strings Attached type of films, you can’t go wrong with this jem.
Ps: Don’t be fooled by the trailer, it iss not flaky in any respect.
