Don't be fooled into thinking that Ballers is some vacuous sporting show that would only appeal to people who like gridiron. In it's debut season there isn't actually a single game played.
Ballers is not about American football players, playing the game. It is about being a player in the game of life, being a 'baller' in all senses of the word. Ballers does have its elements of debauchery and superficialism, but these turn up as segments to reflect the lifestyle that many of the players live...or try to. Underneath all the superficialism, the programme delves into the struggles that the players and agents face, and shows how essential deals can not only make or break a career, but change the course of your entire life, on and off the field.

Having watched all 10 episodes in the space of about 4 days, (it is very addictive) I can tell you that Ballers has got everything a modern day sports drama needs; temptation, unfulfilled potential, infidelity, unresolved family issues, the fear of sports related death and a down on his luck protagonist hoping to recoup his losses. What caught my attention about Ballers was the running time per episode - 30 minutes for a drama these days, is a very rare thing. But what this does, is force the show to move at a faster pace and pack each unfolding episode with only what is necessary. This leaves you both full, but hungry for more. Ballers is definitely scoring a touchdown.
