The various Star Trek series' have offered many of its actors a chance to get behind the camera and direct episodes. But one particular crew member has excelled so much, that nowadays she's the captain, at the helm of her own ship.
he maybe out of the limelight, but no one, anytime soon is about to forget Roxann Dawson. As B'Elanna Torres in Star Trek: Voyager, the half Human, half Klingon, B'Elanna was a very straight forward, no nonsense character. Being of two worlds, she was subject to the normal prejudices which gave the show plenty of material when it came to episodes focussed on her character. Set in Stardate whatever, Star Trek: Voyager never skated around the elephant in the room and without being preachy, the themes of split heritage, dis-ownership, abandonment and alienation were fired across her bridge, showing B'Elanna to be one of the most complex characters in the show. In the exploration of these themes, we saw an interesting story arc and rites of passage rise for B'Elanna, where rejection, redemption and acceptance were are all investigated and resolved to come to a satisfactory conclusion.
| Beyond the days of Star Trek: Voyager which ran for 7 years, Dawson who is, believe it or not is 56, has been a very busy bee directing some of the best shows on TV. Her roll call of credits is a TV director's dream and I guess in acting in 7 seasons of Voyager, averaging 23 episodes a season, you could quite easily see how Dawson picked up the directing bug and expertise to be so adept. By the time Voyager had ended its run, Roxann had directed 12 episodes, which coincidently is a season's worth in TV land today. Out of the 14 Star Trek actors who have directed episodes, Roxann ranks second in how many she helmed, falling under Jonathan Frakes (Riker) from Star Trek: The Next Generation who has directed 16, 2 of which are cinematic movies. Though Roxann hasn't given up acting entirely, you can see that her focus has been on directing and producing and we for one are not upset by that fact in any way.
