Neither an A or B lister, neither a big star or an indie islander...or maybe all of them at the same time. Ethan Hawke has somewhat carved a niche for himself, maintaining his credibility as a good actor, but also in selecting superb, concept-clever projects.
Ethan's Magnificent 7
At birth and by the pedigree of your genes, the government will deem what place in society you will automatically be fit into. One man, dissatisfied with his lot, concocts a scheme against the odds to live his dream, by falsifying his DNA and going up against a system that doesn't factor in the human spirit.
TRAINING DAY (2001)
A newly promoted officer has 24 hours to prove that he is worthy to hold on to his newly acquired detective shield. The problem is, his assessor is a clever, charismatic, but very corrupt, veteran cop, embroiled in dodgy dealings up to the eyeballs. Will the rookie go with the foul flow or swim contrary to the supposed law giver - justice bringer?
THE PURGE (2013)
America has found a way to abolish most of its ills in society through the purge. For one night of the year, every domestic crime you want to commit is legal. Murder, rape and theft is all permissible within a 12 hour portal of 'freedom' and people go all out to get revenge, exercise their hate and explore their counter ideologies in the most deadly of ways. The purge has proven, that in letting the inhibitions of human beings go for just half a day, it is enough to appease 99% of the population's malicious appetite for the rest of the year. On this particular purge night, one family must defend their house or die.
By far the cleverest concept film of Ethan's, we see him play a temporal agent, who must use time and space to hunt down a notorious bomber. This film will blow your socks off as it draws you closer and closer to a conclusion that can't possibly be...a conclusion that will make you feel that somebody has just turned your body inside out.
THE BEFORE TRILOGY
Before Sunrise (1995) tells the story of two strangers that meet randomly in Paris and by mutual instinct, end up spending a romantic day together. Before Sunset (2004) is set 9 years afterwards, where the couple accidentally bump into each other again, but this time will something more potent come of their secondary kismet? Before Midnight (2013) Sees the couple together in a more permanent situation, where the opposite of spontaneity, what their relationship was founded on, may lead to their destruction.
