Sometimes we want our artistic debut to be the grandest thing ever created, but very often we do the next best thing, we get ourselves noticed. As artists we must strive to remember, that a career is not made in one effort, one project or one day.
It may not be the greatest film in the world, but being thatYou're Next made a profit of 2600% one might say that there is something in creating an entity with heart over high art.
The Film
An isolated holiday home holds the gathering for a family retreat, bringing siblings along with their romantic partners in toe, to meet the parents. Although mum and dad are pleasant enough, it would seem that some of their offspring and even their partners, have the warmth of an ice cube, placed in a freezer that's been dropped in the arctic circle. And it is during a petty argument between these gentle souls, at the dinner table, that a guest is mysteriously killed by an unseen menace lurking on the estate grounds. And thus begins a fight for survival, a battle against a remorseless bunch of masked fiends, intent on fulfilling a bloody home invasion...that is if the villains aren't already in the home, dun dun duuuuur!

Making A Mark
You're Next is a success on one hand because you can surmise it was made for dirt cheap. Yet it could rival many-a-film from the slasher genre made with 10 times the budget. However, in terms of originality and concepts, you've seen this film many times before and what tension is built through not knowing who the assailants are or what they want, becomes lost fairly quickly when you predict that...(can't say plot spoiler).
Not to its complete detriment, you will notice thatYou're Next doesn't have the twisted, diabolical nature of Funny Games or the intense visceral vengeance of I Spit On Your Grave and it's certainly not as rewarding as those two films. However the final girl in the narrative is good enough to follow all the way through and has an interesting backstory, as to why she can do what she does. I very much appreciated that the story had good pacing and wasn't dragged out to the end of time either. In fact, You're Next clocks in at approximately one and a half hours and has enough revelations throughout, to keep it interesting, if not a tad predictable.
The film is worthy of a watch, especially for film students who may think that a decent piece of work can only be achieved with big budgets. Where asYou're Next is a perfect example, of a shoe-string budget ($1,000,000) being well spent. We also see what can be achieved with a competent production crew who know what they are doing, as You're Next was shot in only for 4 weeks.
