Hard Morality Tales - Do You Or Don't You?

15/9/2015

A common and more frequent theme is arising in film scripts; the notion that whilst having lots of money is useful, it can quite easily lead to your personal damnation too. 'Cashing' in on this notion, cinema is seemingly producing more and more stories that involve people attaining riches through an over-the-top sacrifice or series of heinous acts. So is society finally learning its lesson about where money really fits in? Or are we proving that we are still stuck, in the same; get rich or die trying rut?

If you think Indecent Proposal was a dilemma and a half, wait until you get a load of what is required in these films and the aftermath they produce.
FILMS WITH OTHER UNIQUE LESSONS

INDECENT PROPOSAL (1993)
A loving couple, in serious financial debt, lose all their savings. With an attempt to increase their money by gambling on the roulette wheel in Las Vegas. Their epic failure worsens their situation and they become desperate. that desperation is seen by a rich millionaire, who offers the couple $1,000,000 if he can spend one single night with the wife. Reluctantly they both finally agree and the deed is done. However the intrusion into something so pure and good ends up ruining their relationship. The Moral: Don't destroy the good in your life that can't be replaced, to hold onto something that can.
CLICK (2006)
Given a magical remote control, Adam Sandler's character is able to control all situations in his life. The Moral: The smaller moments of your life count as much as the big ones - skip none.
HORNS (2014)
In Horns, Daniel Radcliffe's character gains the ability to make people tell the truth - the whole truth and nothing but. What we are exposed to, is how we should not take anybody at face value. People rarely say what they really mean or do what they have to from a sense of responsibility. The Moral: beware the selfish nature of humans.
12 ANGRY MEN (1957 and re-made many, many times)
A jury have to deliberate on whether a man is guilty or innocent of a crime, with a sentence that will send him to his death. Having various personal issues and the want for a quick verdict we are exposed to the frailties of human nature and allowing your so-called peers to judge you. We see that the burden of a great responsibility doesn't touch some people, because they themselves are not emotionally intelligent to judge over anything. The Moral: Beware personal prejudice and broken humans who are put in positions of responsibility.

UNFRIENDED (2014)
there really a ghost in the machine? I'm not telling! You'll just have to watch and find out for yourselves.
Unfriended has to be one of the most important films of the digital age. Where we have normalised sharing our lives and the lives of others, with people all around the world, this story points out the dangers of sharing too much. The story centres around a group of 5 friends who regularly skype, conference call each other as a collective. But one night an anonymous caller joins their group-call, claiming to be Laura Barns, a 'friend' who shot herself after somebody had posted video footage of her caught in an embarrassing situation. What follows is an expose of secrets and lies, utilised with the weapon of social media. Admittedly the real fun comes in watching this group disintegrate as they turn on each other for survival, but mostly for revenge. For the so-called friends and the audience, we are left wondering if an outside party is seeking revenge? Is there a hacker with an agenda, is Laura the dead girl really back or is
The Moral: Social media is the memory that never forgets, friendships can be flakey, liars are abound, judgement online is quick, immediate and harsh, make sure you're the executive producer of your own digital footprint.
