These 2 Sci-Fi films are a testament to the high calibre effects that can be achieved with a minimal budget. For some top Hollywood productions, the entire monies spent on these films, might just cover their catering and transport costs. Though Skyline wasn't the best of films, the effects were top notch and Robot Overlords (a British film) clearly demonstrates, that a good, simple story, with decent actors and of course great, effects, can match the bigger Hollywood films.
SKYLINE (2010) BUDGET - $10,000,000 | ROBOT OVERLORDS (2014) BUDGET - £21,000,000 |
The final production costs for these films, extended way beyond the initial budgets given - so what happened? Well with John Carter; supposed poor allocation of funds - in regards to marketing. But it appears that the final nail in the coffin was hammered, when the director had to re-shoot most of the film. That's technically making 2 films, hence the swelling in production costs. The rumour back then became that John Carter would have to make $600million, just to break even...seems they were right. Waterworld on the other hand suffered production woes because of the difficulty of shooting on water and adding to that hardship, continuous arguments between acting lead Kevin Costner and director Kevin Reynolds might have extended the production schedules.
WATERWORLD (1995) BUDGET - $172,000,000 | JOHN CARTER (2013) BUDGET - $306,600,000 |
GAME OF THRONES PER EPISODE $6,000,000 | THE SIMPSONS (2007) PER EPISODE $2,000,000 | AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. PILOT EPISODE $14,000,000 |
UNFRIENDED was made for $1,000,000 and grossed $62,000,000 worldwide. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT UNFRIENDED IN HARD MORALITY TALES...CLICK THE POSTER | 300 The Spartan inspired action-drama was made for $60,000,000 and shot over 60 days. This may initially make you think that the cost is $1,000,000 per shooting day, but don't forget that includes 2 months of pre-production (the making of costumes, props et al) and post-production. The entire film was shot in chronological order, in studios where there was literally the ground they created to stand on and nothing else but blue screen. Only one scene was shot outside in the entire movie and instead, 1,500 effects were put in to create everything that wasn't real from buildings to ships to spraying blood. This took 1 whole year to complete. |
