Here are 8 teachers you love to hate...but strictly behind their backs.
Whiplash - Fletcher (2014) Having made it into the Shaffer Conservatory; a top school for music, Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is given the false indication of how relaxed classes will be. He doesn't expect, that the one in the same person, who lead him to this fairytale belief, would abuse him into excellence. In his classroom, conductor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) is a force of nature, he is God, the devil and everything in between. He rewards excellence with fellow student usurpmanship and doesn't care who came first - ranks are interchangeable at a whim. Your loyalty, how hard you practice mean nothing. It is all about the performance he wants and he'll get it via psychological and physical abuse if needs be.
Karate Kid Part III - Terry Silver (1989) Following the events of the first Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is given a chance to defend his title. Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) has seen Daniel prove himself against the Cobra Kai bullies and sees no point in re-entering the tournament. He therefore refuses to train Daniel. Unbeknownst to them both, a friend of John Reese (Martin Cove), the Cobra Kai sensei, has been approached by his rich and powerful friend, Terry Silver (Ian Thomas Griffith) to destroy Daniel and his relationship to Mr. Miyagi. Desperately needing a teacher, Daniel succumbs to Silver's offer of 'help' and like the Cobra Kai snake that he is, makes Daniel voluntarily hurt himself and emotionally unstable.
Officer And A Gentlemen - Sgt. Foley (1982) Fighting against the odds to become an aviator, Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) most overcome his less than idyllic childhood, his abusive father and his own mental barriers as he joins the Aviation Officer Candidate School. Here, he unfortunately catches the attention of Marine Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gosset. Jr.) who is one drill instructor no one should mess with. Believing that Zack is not a team player, Sgt. Foley targets and pushes Zack mentally and physically, until he reaches his emotional breaking point. At the same time, Zack's smart mouth, talk-back attitude and mini-business schemes, do him no favours and escalate the situation, until the 2 men come to an impasse, where the solution is resolved in warrior fashion.
Starship Troopers - Sgt. Zim (1997) Career Sgt. Zim is an interesting drill instructor and trainer, as he is one of the few teachers who will not just show you the theory of an application, but really complete a full move or tactic on you. This includes the breaking of cadet's arms, putting them in sleeper holds, throwing knives into the palms of their hands and generally duking it out with his students. Sgt. Zim is so much the real deal, that he actually requests a demotion to Private status, just so he can join the war effort. In a key campaign, Zim is eventually responsible for catching the leader of the enemy and Oddly enough, has to salute some of the soldiers, he just recently trained, as they now out rank him.
Drunken Master - Sam Seed (1978) When a Kung-Fu teacher is infamous because he is known to cripple his students, the last thing you want, is to be sent to him, because you have been mischievous and need discipline. Played by Yuen Siu-tien (father to director/fight choreographer Yuen Woo Ping), the character of Sam Seed appeared in 3 films; Drunken Master, Story of Drunken Master and Dance of the Drunken Mantis, where the style of Drunken Fist Kung-Fu, was brought to international masses. Jackie Chan's Wong Fei Hung depiction, suffered what I call 'Geppetto' training, the worst versions of sit-ups in the world and other methods of training that were arduous at best and torturous at worst.
G.I. Jane - Master Chief John Urgayle (1997) Marine type special forces have made the grade again. This time the all powerful one is Master Chief Urgayle, who takes great pleasure in running a 20 hour a day programme, that in real life has hospitalised candidates and killed others. Here he is faced with a unique challenge, in that, for the very the first time in Navy S.E.A.L history, a female has been included on the programme and there is a wonder in how he will train her, in comparison to the men. Master Chief alters absolutely nothing. If anything, he makes the programme harder to make a point. And the tip of that point is made abundantly sharp, when he initiates a mock rape, to keep the training as real as it can get.
To Kill With Intrigue - Chin Chang Yin (1977) Chen Lung's (Jackie Chan) family is wiped out by the Killer Bee gang lead by Chin Chang Yin (Feng Hsu). However she spares his life for reasons too long to go into. She then follows Lung around, appearing to him every so often, to emotionally torment him. Later on in the story, Lung is almost killed, by accomplices of an unknown traitor, that was solely responsible for leading the Killer Bees to kill his family in the first place. Chin rescues Lung in battle, heals and then trains him to avenge his family. But in order for Lung to leave the compound, Chin has to be able to beat her in a fight. Each time he loses, she punishes him through beatings, making him swallow hot coal and branding his face with a thin sheet of metal. Messed up or what?
Full Metal Jacket - Gny. Sgt. Harman (1987) The most fierce mouth in the Marines had to make it in our Top 8, as he was the inspiration for the countdown in the first place. Ronald Lee Emery gave one hell of a performance as the machine gun mouthed Gunnery Sgt. that would turn you into a marine, if it meant you had to die in the process. Breaking down cadets mentally, physically and in ways you didn't know were possible. Emery a real life Marine and instructor blasted to smithereens, every modern day politically correct 'ism' we know of now, throwing them all out of the window, with some napalm to boot. Race, sexual orientation, age, your family and whatever he could think of, were thrown in your face, as a verbal grenade!
