I hate stereotypes. And yes, I do understand that there are specific norms and traditions passed down from one generation to the next (within a set culture), that can have a people behaving in a certain way. But to meet someone for the first time (or not at all) and believe that you can assess everything about them, means either you're an arrogant git, psychic, very, very intuitive or the person in question is a walking cliché. There is nothing more that annoys me, than people taking pleasure in living up to a stereotype and condemning others for not.
"You don't act black" - since when has melanin had a personality and a dress code. "You don't act like a girl"- meaning YOU have a pre-determined and limited outlook on what a woman can be. The following list to some are the identifying signifiers to a person of a given culture. But they are stereotypes, which as a matter of fact is a system of identification used negatively. www.thetoptens.com/most-annoying-stereotypes/ |
Beyond his obvious contributions to music, another aspect of Prince's life that people are commending him on, was in his ability, to be his true self. It may seem like a strange accolade to give to a person, as who else would he be? But the underlying truth behind this observation, is that there are a too many people on this planet that aren't being true to themselves...
On the flip side, when somebody calls you weird, strange, unreadable, unpredictable, or mysterious, you can take these as compliments...away from any sociopathic versions of course. Here, what is being implied about you, is that you are exhibiting a 'new' format, away from any recognisable pattern. This means your individuality is firing off on all cylinders and people can't predict anything about you.
You can't create unique, original music, films, paintings, sculptures, cakes, architecture etc if the genuine you is tucked away in some façade. If you want mass acceptance over individual freedom, then you have to ask yourself what the point of your existence is. How are we, the world at large, supposed to receive your brilliance, if you can't even create it, because you are not being you!
"It's an unfortunate and common human factor, that fear often derives from the unknown".
Now I understand that some people are in the process of discovering themselves, others are deliberately fake because they know that their true face is no good. Some show a partial part of themselves and to a degree, all of these are all acceptable - if you do no harm to others. But the tragic personality in all these mask dances, comes from those walking around with a total set of programmed behaviours, given to them by someone else. I could probably bare the performance if they would just leave other people alone. But instead, some poor, unique soul is subjected to teasing, bullying or being challenged because they are supposedly different. Newsflash: they are not different, you are all the same. The following, antagonistic onslaught to this 'different person' usually comes from a place of fear, as the robot's programming can't understand this new software. This evolved human being must seem like a virus to them, as their own lack of originality, honesty and integrity is magnified and highlighted in contrast. It's an unfortunate and common human factor, that fear often derives from the unknown and if people like this had succeeded in dulling Prince's light early on in his life - we would have no Prince the artist. Or as a direct consequence, we might have had some watered down version who might have lasted 5 years tops.
