It Was 20 Years Ago - Remembering RnBs Great Albums

1/11/2016

So, not that long ago, I posted some song lyrics as my Facebook status. A friend reminded me, that the song and the album it debuted on, came out exactly 20 years ago. This prompted me to remember that a lot of classics came out that same year...

I won't lie and say it seemed just like yesterday, but it doesn't seem that long ago, that some of the best modern, new wave RnB gems were released. Let's take a look at the debut, sophomore and continued legacy hits, that wowed the charts and wore out the dance floor...and in some cases the mattress.

The song lyrics I wrote as my Facebook status were from Ginuwine's debut album The Bachelor. I was introduced to him  by a girl I was madly in love with in the time. I liked her, she liked him...but he weren't around so no one was happy - 550 What!

SOPHOMORE ALBUMS

Able to fit in with any contemporary RnB artist, Toni's music always had a wider spectrum of song types than your typical RnB album and this gained her major crossover appeal. Did you know, Toni sings in the lowest register possible for a female vocalist? A superb contralto, Toni can also raise her voice to hit us with mezzo melodies. Now that is a serious range.

CONTINUED LEGACY

Before NKOTB, before NSync, before a million other modern boy bands, New Edition were out there setting the template in how it's done. Home Again, their 6th album, was a first time that all 6 members were featured together, as Bobby Brown had been kicked out in 1986. The reunification saw him, Ricky Bell, Ronnie Devoe, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill be as one.

Born of the dance floor, I like to play music that moves people physically and emotionally. Old enough to remember when vinyl was king, I still use wax as my main diet and will probably do so forever.
