In one saga of revenge porn, a bitter break-up led a man to actually set up a new Facebook account in the name and image of his ex. He then went about adding all her friends and family to this fake account, the went about posting 7 sexually explicit photos of her, that had been taken privately together, for their pleasure. Within hours, this poor woman had been viewed 48,000 times. The punishment for her ex, was a 6 month suspended sentence, 180 hours of community service and charges that accumulated to £166. Meanwhile her plight went on.
...and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of imbalanced scales in its hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice of ridicule and shame and the scales never tipped back to be balanced again." Revenge Porn. Revenge Porn is truly an all new low in social media interaction. It is the act of posting a sexual encounter (video or photo) online, for all who have access to the internet. The aim is to humiliate the person in the video/photo by exposing that material to their family, friends, work colleagues and even people who will come to know the victim in the future. Imagine a potential employer doing an internet search on your name to see what comes up. There is also something telling about revenge porn, something specific in the demographic of the victims in comparison to the attackers, that speaks volumes about the sexual inequality of our society. When it comes to revenge porn, women in general are not the ones posting videos or photos. It is not a common occurrence for them to be the perpetrators. Why? Because a mighty double standard still exists within the sexual dynamics of men and women, where men are still heroes (or comedic) when they do sexual things and women are sluts. Why is it a man can post a video of himself having sex with a woman as part of a defamation campaign against her, yet all the negative focus is on her? Some men are astute enough to edit photos so their face is not seen, but many don't bother and many still leave their bodies in the photos, yet never suffer any consequences. In fact the only revenge porn that I know of, where a man can be the victim, comes of those who are secretly gay and evidence of that has been caught. "When it comes to revenge porn, women in general are not the ones posting videos or photos. It is not a common occurrence for them to be the perpetrators. Why?" There are many roads to revenge porn; it could come from a couple who had consensual sex in front of a recordable device and then have split up badly, leading to the man to wanting to hurt her. It can be a deliberately, pre-meditated con so a woman is filmed having sex without her knowledge. Whatever the reason and however it is done, one must always remember that the internet never forgets and one copy of an image can multiply at a super fast rate, around the world very quickly.
